did not live up to expectations

Why did I read this? And am I glad I did?

There were two main reasons I did not like this book : (1) It had been far too long since I read the first in the series and I did not have take the time to reread it. (2) The main character lost her umpf.

Let’s take it back a step… I really enjoyed the first in this series. I thought the characters had depth and a sense of realism that made the mythology work. I’m not a huge fan of angel themed YA books, but I was intrigued by the Upstairs, Downstairs, Bound, Fallen, and especially the Siders. I still am. To be honest the mythology was the main thing that got me through this one. That and Madeline.

I loved Madeline. Had the book been about her and Luke more and less about Eden it would have had a much higher rating. She is messed up, crazy, easy to hate and love. I’m torn on whether I’ll read the next one, but if I do it will be to see more of her. Luke is amazingly complex. You can’t quite figure him out.

That brings me to Eden. She seemed lifeless. I understand that it was on purpose… to a point. But at what point does making a character blah go too far? I wanted to know what happened to Gabriel, Madeline, other Siders, even Az… but I didn’t really care about her. I don’t remember disliking her. I just don’t remember her.

All and all, I finished the book in one night. I was entertained, but I would have rather been reading something else. And yes, I may even still pick up the next book.

My Recommendation : Go ahead and read it if you have read the first one. If you haven’t started the series yet, maybe wait until the last one is released and reviewed.

Brief Summary

Eden won the battle-she saved her true love from the darkest evil. But the war has only just begun. With secrets swirling around her, powerful allies unraveling, and life-and death-as she knows it eroding, Eden and those she loves tread dangerous ground. Can she trust anyone? Will her unearthly powers be her salvation or her downfall? A sweeping, dark, and sexy paranormal romance that will haunt readers with an inventive mythology and a cinematic New York City filled with shadows and longing.

entertaining enough but a little predictable

Why did I read this? And am I glad I did?

I had seen a couple reviews for this and needed an escape read. This did the trick. The dating service plot device was creative and worked better than I expected. The main characters fit into the typical PNR roles. Overly-caring, doesn’t-know-how-hot-she-is virgin and insanely attractive alpha male. There was enough build-up of the side characters that I’m planning on picking up the next book, but they didn’t take away from the main story in this one. A few hot scenes. A few fights. Nothing that intense. According to my GoodReads updates I felt there were a lot of flaws in this one, but at this point I just remember liking it enough for just entertainment.

Brief Summary

WANTED

Single human female to join charming, wealthy, single male were-cougar for a night of romantic fun—and maybe more.

Me: The tall, sensuous, open-minded leader of my clan.

You: A deliciously curvy virgin who’s intimately familiar with what goes bump in the night. Must not be afraid of a little tail. Prefer a woman who’s open to exploring her animal nature. Interest in nighttime walks through the woods a plus.

My turn-ons include protecting you from the worst the supernatural world has to offer. Ready for an adventure? Give me a call.

Vampires and doppelgangers need not apply.

enjoyed the world-building not the girl

Why did I read this? And am I glad I did?

After further organizing my GoodReads shelves, I realized how many series I am in the middle of reading (81). Some are beyond my control and I can’t continue until the next book is released, however, the majority of them I just need to pick back up. The Lords of the Underworld series is one of those series that I have the majority of the series and needed to pick it back up.

I enjoyed this book. It was entertaining and I do love books with a dark take on Greek mythology. My main dislike was the female lead. She annoyed the crap out of me. I get the impression that his was intentional seeing how she annoyed just about everyone in the book as well. I don’t want to scare people from picking this up. I loved the male lead. A man so broken from a previous loss that he scarred himself to ensure that no female would ever approach him.

I’ve very much so looking forward to reading the rest of the series. I cannot believe I have to wait so long for Paris’ book!!!

Brief Summary

She has tempted many men…but never found her equal. Until now.
Though she has lived for centuries, Anya, goddess of anarchy, has never known pleasure. Until Lucien, the incarnation of death–a warrior eternally doomed to take souls to the hereafter. He draws her like no other. And Anya will risk anything to have him.

But when the merciless Lord of the Underworld is ordered by the gods to claim Anya herself, their uncontrollable attraction becomes an anguished pursuit. Now they must defeat the unconquerable forces that control them, before their thirst for one another demands a sacrifice of love beyond imagining…

Favorite Quotes

He knew women, even if he couldn’t get close to any one of them. While most loved all things romantic, they hid their romance novels as if they were something to be ashamed of. They couldn’t know that he read them. He loved them, actually, and would have liked a happy ending for himself.

- oh Paris! I can’t wait for your book!
