In Six Words
perfect mix of action and romance
Why did I read this? And am I glad I did?
I saw a review for this a while back and due to being warned about the cliffhanger, I put it off until the second book was released. While I did devour both books in under 24 hours, I shouldn’t have waited so long to read this. I loved this book! I love the author’s writing style. I love the multi-dimensional characters. I love the bloody fights. I love the steamy romance. And are you ready for this? I love the romantic triangle drama. How the author has pulled off such a complicated romance without either pissing me off or making the girl look like a slut is a sign of her genius.
I have already pre-ordered everything that I can and will read whatever this author puts out next.
Brief Summary
Some secrets are dangerous. This Secret is deadly.
Secret McQueen, Book 1
For Secret McQueen, her life feels like the punch line for a terrible joke. Abandoned at birth by her werewolf mother, hired as a teen by the vampire council of New York City to kill rogues, Secret is a part of both worlds, but belongs to neither. At twenty-two, she has carved out as close to a normal life as a bounty hunter can.
When an enemy from her past returns with her death on his mind, she is forced to call on every ounce of her mixed heritage to save herself-and everyone else in the city she calls home. As if the fate of the world wasn’t enough to deal with, there’s Lucas Rain, King of the East Coast werewolves, who seems to believe he and Secret are fated to be together. Too bad Secret also feels a connection with Desmond, Lucas’s second-in-command…
Warning: This book contains a sarcastic, kick-ass bounty hunter; a metaphysical love triangle with two sexy werewolves; a demanding vampire council; and a spicy seasoning of sex and violence.

Plot/Pacing/Writing Style
The book had a great underlying main plot including a terrifying bad guy reappearing from Secret’s past while still balancing all the other dramas thrown her way. The mythologies of both the vampires and werewolves were explained to us through Secret’s lack of knowledge of her heritages. It worked beautifully in keeping us wondering without being lost.
I’m not a fan of love triangles. However, I had read in another review that this one was handled well. Oh and it was. While I can’t say that I don’t have a favorite, I’m not as crushed or overwhelmed by the emotional turmoil as I can sometimes get in these situations. I’m very interested to see how this plays out.
The pacing was good. While there were a few times that I wanted to get out of Secret’s head and back into the action, for the most part it was impossible to put down.
Characters
The characters, as usual, are what made this book for me. It wasn’t just he main characters that kept my attention. All the characters in this book are built up to the point where I can almost believe I’ve spent more time with them and can say things like “that sounds like something Dominic would say”.
Secret is a great female lead. She’s tough. She’s smart. She’s in over her head. I liked spending time with her and that’s really what a good book is all about. I laughed out loud on multiple accounts and found myself on the edge of my seat feeling her tension sometimes in the same moment.
Lucas is a little more than your classic alpha. He’s patient. He’s seems somewhat understanding. But don’t think for a second that he doesn’t want to be in charge. Desmond may be in the lead by a tad as far as this love triangle goes. As Lucas’ best friend and second in command, it’s painful for him to so attached to Secret. His emotional openness sold him and I need to see more of him and soon.
Holden and Secret have a strained, yet close relationship. How could he not be holding a grudge against her for holding him back? And yet he obviously cares about her. I can see this going somewhere different in future books…
Favorite Quotes
I needed to get on top of him. Oh, if I only had a nickel for every time that had been my solution for things.
- I loved Secret’s sense of humor!
“Let me try to phrase this in a way that won’t frighten you.”
“That’s probably not the best way to start.”
- Lucas and Secret’s meeting could not have been handled better.

Wow. I have to say that I honestly would have never picked up this book just on sight. I haven’t heard anything about it and it’s probably one I would’ve ignored if it hadn’t been for your review. Knowing how similar our reading tastes are, though, I’m putting it on my to-read list. Thanks, Tara!
But…love triangle. Sigh. Now I’m kind of curious about this one.
