This book in 6 words:

insanely unique, swoon-worthy, and bleeping hilarious

Why did I read this? And am I glad I did?

I can’t find this in my TBR list, so I’m not sure who first brought it to my attention. I pre-ordered it after seeing many great reviews for it and then didn’t read it. I decided you guys might want a break from DH so after seeing the review for this by Kay @ The Infinite Shelf, I decided to go ahead and read it. What the french toast was I waiting for?! To be honest, I’m glad I read this during my Dark Hunter obsession because it might help with the P.A.B.D..

This really was a fantastic change of pace. I loved how original the story and characters were! I have a new favorite YA male lead. And Evie is at the top of my favorite gals too. I laughed out loud so much my husband complained that I was keeping him awake. There is a lot left hanging, however, we do get a resolution of the main plot arc. I CANNOT WAIT for the next book…. which is a year away!! I don’t think you need to ask if I’ll be looking for more by this author.

PS. My P.A.B.D. was so bad that I went back and reread most of the book the next day.

Brief Summary

Weird as it is working for the International Paranormal Containment Agency, Evie’s always thought of herself as normal. Sure, her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she’s falling for a shape-shifter, and she’s the only person who can see through paranormals’ glamours, but still. Normal.

Only now paranormals are dying, and Evie’s dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She soon realizes that there may be a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths. Not only that, but she may very well be at the center of a dark faerie prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

So much for normal.

Plot/Pacing/Writing Style

I didn’t really know what to expect when I started this one. I loved the mixture of different paranormals and the human organization “helping” them. It of course made me flash back to when Buffy worked for The Initiative. While the core of this story is a beautiful romance, I think the action and mystery balanced it out perfectly. I’m extremely interested to see what happens in the next book.

The pacing was perfect. I would have read this front to back if my hubs didn’t make me stop to eat dinner with him.

Characters

I loved that Evie wasn’t in high school, but that she was obsessed with it. Her desire to be normal and belief that “normal” would be like her favorite teen drama TV show, was both hilarious and sad. I thought she sounded her age without being annoying and she constantly made me laugh out loud. We get to see some personal growth as discovers who she is and what she is willing to sacrifice for those she cares about.

Lend is so swoon-worthy that I can’t get enough. He is sweet and kind which was a great change of pace. While I like dark and mysterious, this melted my heart more than any bad boy could. Their relationship was developed so perfectly that even though it progressed over a short period of time, it felt believable. They built a friendship and learned to flirt then learned to kiss. I don’t want to go much into what he can do or who he is, but I will say that his mom stated it perfectly. Evie and Lend’s abilities seem to balance perfectly.

While I kinda hate Reth, I’m insanely curious to learn more about him. He blurs the lines and I’m not sure what to think of him.

Favorite Quotes

We spent the morning conjugating (a word that sounds dirty but is, in fact, boring) and conversing in good old espanol.

“Are there a lot of paranormals at the school, too? Vamps?”

“Arianna snorted. “Why on earth would a vampire go to high school?”

If it were possible to die of happiness, you could have written my obituary right then.

Recommendations

If you like YA with a paranormal theme, what the heck are you waiting for?!

Going Deeper – Contains SPOILERS!

We end this one with Lend and Evie as the cutest couple ever… and I have to say one of the things I loved most about this book was that there was no love triangle!! However, the very little that the author has released about the next book introduces a new boy and we see more Reth. Please, oh please, let there not be another love interest introduced. Lend is one of my favorite male leads and I’m honestly afraid I’ll hate the next book if his heart is broken.

  • Blahahahahahaha! “Why on earth would a vampire go to high school?”

That quote is one for the Oh No She Didn’t history books!

Gah! Why haven’t I read this book yet? I even met the author and thought she was the cutest and funniest person ever. I skipped over your spoiler section, but I do remember the author mentioning the desperate way that Evie wanted to be normal and go to high school. Okay. gonna have to move it up on the TBR. Already made my reading list for Nov, but maybe I can shift things around.

Thanks for the review Tara. So glad you had fun with this one.

  • Hahaha I love your review! I, too, really enjoyed this one…it was total entertainment from start to finish! Great review, Tara :)

  • I love the comparison with The Initiative. I really think we’re going to see something very close to that in future books.

And Evie’s obsession with lockers? So funny!

  • I really enjoyed this book too! I can’t wait for the next one! It felt like such a fresh addition to the genre!

P.S. I loved the Initiative reference. I’m three episodes away from finishing season 7 of Buffy now, and I think I’ll cry when it’s over. Why did I wait so long to watch this series? Seriously.

  • This sounds like such a fun book! Honestly, at first I just wanted to get it because of the pretty cover, but I’ve seen so many glowing reviews that I want to read it even more now!

I’m so glad you enjoyed it too! That quote, “Why on earth would a vampire go to high school?”, had me laugh when I first read it! My man has been asking me that constantly, every time I read a book and I mention “vampires” and “high school” in the same sentence. Teehee!

  • Tara SG

I need to make time to watch the whole series. I started watching the first couple seasons again, but I only own the first 4.
