This book in 6 words:

loved mix of mythology and romance

Why did I read this? And am I glad I did?

I’m not sure why I was putting off reading this series, but after seeing a few reviews recently I decided to go ahead and start the series… but I started with the wrong book. I had a feeling I was missing a little back story with another couple, but otherwise it didn’t matter. This book was exactly what I was looking for. Romance. Steamy scenes. Fighting. Mystery. Humor. And I loved the Greek mythology!

* I’ve since gone back and read Fantasy Lover and while it’s set in the same world, it isn’t about Dark Hunters. So you could start with this book. HOWEVER, I really enjoyed Fantasy Lover and highly recommend it! *

Brief Summary

Dear Reader,

Have you ever wanted to know what it’s like to be immortal? To journey through the night stalking the evil that preys on humans? To have unlimited wealth, unlimited power?

That is my existence, and it is dark and dangerous. I play hero to thousands, but am known to none. And I love every minute of it. Or so I thought until one night when I woke up handcuffed to my worst nightmare: a conservative woman in a button-down shirt. Or in Amanda’s case, buttoned all the way up to her chin. She’s smart, sexy, witty, and wants nothing to do with the paranormal—in other words, me.

My attraction to Amanda Devereaux goes against everything I stand for. Not to mention the last time I fell in love it cost me not only my human life, but also my very soul. Yet every time I look at her, I find myself wanting to try again. Wanting to believe that love and loyalty do exist. Even more disturbing, I find myself wondering if there’s any way a woman like Amanda can love a man whose battle scars run deep, and whose heart was damaged by a betrayal so savage that he’s not sure it will ever beat again.

Plot/Pacing/Writing Style

I really love the world Ms Kenyon has created. The Greek mythology mixed up with a paranormal element was fantastic. I didn’t feel like the information was overwhelming, but you get a lot of wonderful history. The relationship between the main characters both physical and emotional is the main focus of the book, but that was exactly what I was in the mood for and this one was well-done. There was also plenty of fighting and humor to make this a perfect escape.

I read this all in one sitting without feeling bored or rushed, so I thought the pacing was perfect.

Characters

I sometimes wonder if I’ll ever get bored by the innocent, self-depreciating girl finding her inner sex goddess in the hands of an alpha male… probably not :) I liked Amanda (except I don’t like when a character is named after a friend lol). She is smart, stubborn, and able to handle herself in the face of danger. She’s also fighting to be normal in an abnormal family which I found fun.

To use Amanda’s words, Kyrian is “yummy”. I thought I had seen some tortured pasts, but he was literally tortured physically and emotionally. It really tore me up to see what had been done to him in the past and it explained a lot of why he is the way he is. However, he doesn’t let that stop him from being an extremely nice guy that is fantastic at his job of kicking ass. He also has a sense of humor that I loved, but I can also see how it would drive Amanda nuts.

I really loved Nick’s humor and I’m looking forward to reading his series soon too.

Favorite Quotes

“Oh God,” she breathed. “I just kissed a vampire!”

“Oh gods, I kissed a human!”

- fyi the sarcasm in this book makes me want to talk back a lot tomorrow

“You’re not funny.”

- this is said back and forth a lot and I found it hilarious because I say that to Shane a lot

Recommendations

If you like paranormal romance then you should definitely check this out. People who like BDB or Lords of the Underworld would most likely enjoy this.

Going Deeper – NO spoilers

Ok I’m considering this no spoilers because we all know that in these books they fall in love… sorry if I ruined it for you :)

I believe it was my latest review that I mentioned the relationship feeling too rushed or forced. Considering the fact that the main two characters in this book meet for the first time handcuffed together and insanely attracted to each other I feared the worst. However, this author made the relationship grow in a way that did not feel unbelievable (for this type of book, we could spend hours talking about if this “kind” of love is real…). I think this is a sign of a truly great romance writer. I’m very much so looking forward to more from her.
