This book in 6 words:

great new paranormal world with romance

Why did I read this? And am I glad I did?

I came across this series in one of All Things Urban Fantasy’s Cover Art Coverage posts. I hadn’t heard of them before so I headed over to Amazon and after reading the summary decided to try it out. I was really impressed with the story! While I liked the romance and fighting, I was most enamored with the history and detailed mythology. It wasn’t overwhelming and there’s still plenty to learn, but it balanced the steam and action really well. I’ll definitely be continuing this series. It reminded me a little of BDB and Lords of the Underworld books. Also each book centers around different characters so no major cliffhangers.

Brief Summary

In the days when powerful witches used their magic to shield humanity from demons, their allies and guardians were a group of men gifted with preternatural abilities of their own–the witch guardians. But when a band of witches traded their humanity for demonic power, the ancient bond was broken, and the guardians became the hunters.

Darcy MacAlister knows nothing of demons or magic. But this beautiful young woman is about to discover the truth about her past . . . and her future. For she is a witch–not just any witch, but the key to breaking the curse that has plagued witches and the men who hunt them. For if a hunter kills an innocent witch by mistake, the price is no less than a piece of his soul.

Axel Locke, gorgeous leader of the Wing Slayer Hunters, has sworn never to shed the blood of the earth witches who have resisted the temptation of demonic power. But when his sister is cursed by a demon witch, he discovers that Darcy MacAlister may hold the cure–if she can master her newfound powers in time. When the chase begins and Axel and Darcy come face-to-face, this hunter must weigh his soul against his honor–and against his heart.

Plot/Pacing/Writing Style

Like I said above I was really impressed with the world-building. I was a little unsure of reading a book about witches, but I ended up loving learning about them. Since the main female character is new to the world, we learn a lot along with her. There was plenty of romantic tension and fighting to balance out learning the history.

The action picks up pretty quickly and keeps up through out the book. I was only planning on reading a few chapters, but ended up reading it all in one sitting. The book shifts POVs between the two main characters, but it flows very well. I liked the author’s writing style and felt it was detailed enough without over doing it.

Characters

I really liked Darcy. She’s smart, strong, and sexy. She had a tough upbringing. Constant teasing from peers and a father who hated her. However, she finds her strength in this new world. Not that she accepted everything right off the bat. She also is willing to sacrifice for others which lead to some tear jerking moments.

Axel is a great alpha male. He’s a little more sensitive than others I’ve read lately, but it worked really well for his character. He is battling a curse and risking his morals and soul to save his little sister. His interactions with Darcy were sure to full of laughs, steam or bickering.

We didn’t see the other hunters as much as the side characters in BDB, but we get a feel for their characters and I’m looking forward to seeing more of them in the future.

Favorite Quotes

Phoenix looked at him. “What are you, another super-mortal like Chuck Norris?”

Which lead to Chuck Norris jokes. This was my favorite: “If you want a list of Chuck Norris’s enemies, check the extinct species list.”

Recommendations

If you like books like the BDB or Lords of the Underworld, you should check out this series. If you like paranormal romance with a good story and some action, then this is a good one to add to your TBR.
