This book in 6 words:

felt like I read this before

Why did I read this? And am I glad I did?

I first came across this book for Blog with Bite, but I didn’t get around to reading it in time. So it sat on my Kindle until I received the second in the series for review. When I finished this I was not glad I read it, HOWEVER, I liked the second book more so I’m am glad I started the series. I had a lot of issues with this book. The pacing was slow. The “science” wasn’t real enough for the nerd in me. Most importantly it was predictable. I think the BIG surprise was easy to place only because I felt like this theme has been done too many times recently. All that being said, I’ll most likely continue the series. All of the books end with HUGE cliffhangers!

Brief Summary

Weston Wilson is not immortal and he is of this world. But, aging is not part of his existence, and eighteen-year-old Sophie Slone is determined to find out why. In doing so, she could also uncover something about her own life expectancy that she may not want to know. Suddenly, immortality will mean everything and nothing all at the same time.

Intensely fascinating and rich with determination, The Pace brings together romance, mystery, and suspense in a compelling bond that is sure to have readers asking for more.

Plot/Pacing/Writing Style

The plot itself wasn’t terrible. It has just been done too much recently. I hate to go into it too much in fear of ruining for others what I thought was predictable. The science didn’t sit right with me. I know I should be more open minded, however, the microbio nerd in me kept saying “this would not happen”.

The pacing was slow. Don’t expect a lot of action. This wouldn’t have bothered me too much except the end tried to add some action, and then it was rushed.

Characters

I did like the characters. I thought that both Sophie and Weston were believable and well-rounded. Their relationship was slightly rushed, but they still got time to get to know each other (at least more than a lot of YA books recently).

Sophie is a loner. She prefers to stay in her room and hide away from the world and a future she can’t figure out. She’s smart, stubborn, and caring. Weston is mature for a 19-year-old, but that’s understandable. He seems to really care about Sophie and they balance each other well.

Recommendations

If you like YA romance with a sci-fi/paranormal twist, I’d recommend borrowing this book from a friend or the library. I will say that even if you don’t love this one, you might want to try the second in the series.
