This book in 6 words:

yes, she did just say that

Why did I read this? And am I glad I did?

The wonderful Felicia read this recently and after seeing her review I instantly requested the book from my library. I saved this book to help with Linger‘s P.A.B.D. and it did the trick. I really enjoyed The Accidental Werewolf (despite the author’s warning lol). It was snarky and smoking with the perfect touch of mystery and danger. I honestly thought I had it all figured out, but I didn’t. While the main character annoyed me in the beginning (more on this in the character section), she grew on me quickly. Overall, this was a fun, easy read and I will be starting the next book in this series VERY soon!

Brief Summary

When Marty Andrews gets bitten by a mangy mutt while walking her teacup poodle, her blond hair darkens, the hair on her legs starts growing at an alarming rate, and her mood swings put her dream job as a sales rep for Bobbie-Sue Cosmetics in serious jeopardy.

Then a drool-worthy man shows up at her door claiming that he accidentally bit Marty. And since he’s a werewolf, she is now, too. Thinking Keegan Flaherty is clearly insane, Marty refuses to believe a word until a kidnapping makes her realize there’s more at stake than just her highlights. And she must put her out-of-control life in the hands of the man who makes her blood run wild in more ways than one…

Plot/Pacing/Writing Style

The author doesn’t try to mess with the werewolf mythology. Instead she takes a normal girl and throws her into a world she didn’t want to know existed. I personally liked the mystery and didn’t find it too predictable. The romantic tension is steamy (leading up to some well-written make-you-want-to-jump-your-husband-smexiness).

The pacing is pretty good. There were only a few times I found myself thinking “Didn’t we already cover this?”, but on the other hand some of it was watching Marty come to terms with things that I would probably need to repeat a few times too…

I really enjoyed the writer’s style. While there were some words that made me go “huh?”, overall, she had me laughing out loud and wishing I was as clever and sassy as her characters. I liked the slight shifting of POVs that gave the reader a little more background without taking away from Marty.

Characters

At first Marty annoyed the Hell out of me. I think this is partially (A) on purpose and (B) because having worked in sales personally, I’ve dealt with these “we can do it!” bubbly sales bitches that make me cringe. HOWEVER, Marty really grew on me. By the end of the book I thought of her as smart, independent, hard-working, caring, and maybe still a little neurotic and stubborn.

Keegan is one smoldering alpha-male. I felt that he fit well with the typical gruff werewolf persona and loved to see his softer side come through from time to time.

I want more Nina and cannot wait to read her story!

Favorite Quotes

There are some good ones… but I think I’ve cussed enough in this post already… That and I’m not sure they would be as funny out of context…

Recommendations

If you like paranormal romance with some snarky humor, you should give this a go. There is a good mystery, but not a lot of action and fighting. There is a lot of romantic tension, but the story had a lot more too it.

Going Deeper – NO spoilers

I just wanted to take a second to ask why the @#%% the eBook for this wonderful book is more than the paperback. Yes, yes I know we weren’t promised cheap eBooks… But while I can’t say I’m happy to pay the same price for an electronic book (that I don’t even technically own) as I would pay for a paperback, I do not want to pay more. I already paid for the damn device. OK rant over… for now…

  • Hmmm…I wasn’t planning on reading this one, but after reading your review, I think I might give it a shot. I love the mix of humor/paranormal romance. And I totally feel you on the ebook thing. It drives me crazy too!

  • Great Review! I felt the same way about Marty :) I think though we were supposed to be a little annoyed and probably because we “accept” the paranormal world (at least in books). However, what if it happened to us—I think I would be more annoying than Marty (and maybe crying in a corner LOL)! This is one of the few books I own in paperback so I didn’t even look at the ereader price—I don’t think ebooks should ever be more (different topic for a different day). I am glad it made you smile—it definitely made me giggle.

  • OMG! This is the second review I’ve gotten this week where the reviewer just totally nailed it :)

I’ll say this again, I almost never comment on reviews good, bad or otherwise, because I don’t want reviewers and readers to feel like this flippy-assed author is intruding on your conversations. I’m A-okay with all opinions, and I’d never beat anyone down for them. I don’t defend, I don’t justify what I write and I never correct anyone’s interpretations of my books, right or wrong. It is what it is, and that’s the deal as a writer. But I DID warn you not to do it on Twitter. So you sort of gave me permission. LOLLOL

However, YES! Yes, Marty was supposed to be irritating and get on your nerves. She’s a saleswoman–they have an answer, and it’s always annoyingly positive, for everything. The intent was to take this single-minded, “Booyah” color wheels and sky blue convertibles woman and turn her ordered, yippy-skippy life upside down–then make her love being a werewolf. And definitely she has some repetitive moments, but I kept thinking, were I sporting a fuzzy nub of a tail, I’d probably be repetitive, too. So I threw it in.

And you got that. I can’t tell you how amazingly awesome it is to have it summed up so perfectly :) And even if you didn’t end up liking it, I imagine the review would have been just as comprehensive.

So thank you-this has been a fab week for me and reviews!

@ Felicia : Thanks for reading/reviewing/recommending this one!

  • Tara SG

@ Dakota Cassidy : Wow! Thanks for stopping by! And a big thank you for writing such a fun book! Oh you definitely warned me so it’s all fair game! I’m really glad that I was able to help make your week a good one!

I wonder if part of why I’m unsure of my future in sales is because I’m not a “the answer is positive” kind of girl…

  • I really think it depends on what you’re selling, doll. I could never do it because I’m all about getting to the point. Period. I hate the wooing a customer crap. LOL. But the cosmetic ladies I watched in action could turn Atilla the Hun Glam-Wow, given five minutes and some blusher. LOLLOL

Me? I’m more like Nina–to the point. I just don’t swear as much. Not vocally, anyway. Instead, I think it in my head :)

  • Tara SG

@ Dakota Cassidy : That’s very true. Oddly enough I was good at it, I just have to believe in what I’m selling. I’m too much like Nina to be able to sell something I wouldn’t buy myself. Now I just need to find something I want to sell for a living…

Ladies at cosmetic counters can get me to buy anything LOL. I’m afraid to go near them…

  • Awesome review! I loved this book, so glad you liked it as well. Dakota rocks at snarky humor, which is why I love her. Looking forward to reading her other books, as I’m betting they’re just as good!

  • Tara SG

@ Alexia561 : Thank you :) She does snarky humor perfectly! I’m really looking forward to the next book. I’m thinking I’ll read it tomorrow :)
