These books in 6 words:
one of my all-time favorite series
Why did I read this? And am I glad I did?
I wanted to reread the books to refresh my memory in preparation for the release of the next book in the series, Dead in the Family. I read the books so quickly the first time that I found that I barely remember what happened in the later books. This made rereading them almost as fun as reading them the first time. I’m glad I took the time to do it and look forward to rereading them again in the future.
Brief Summary
How could I possibly give a brief summary of the entire series?! Sookie Stackhouse is a twenty-five year old waitress that has a peculiar ability. She can read minds. As it turns out she’s not the weirdest thing out there. Vampires have come out of the coffin and much to Sookie’s surprise, she can’t read their minds. This causes her to find comfort in spending time with Bill Compton, the first vampire in Bon Temps ensuring Sookie’s life will no longer being boring or safe.
Plot/Pacing/Writing Style
I didn’t love the series until maybe book 4, but the mystery and characters drew me in quickly. I like Ms Harris’ writing style and find myself laughing out loud a lot while reading the series. Most of the books are fast paced and filled with suspense. They do get darker as they go on though.
Characters
I really like Sookie and the woman she’s become as the series has progressed. She is smart and sassy without being over the top. She has real feelings that often confuse her. I’ve got to say I also like that the author made a point to make her an average sized girl. She’s no size 4 and while sometimes she complains about it, overall she is proud of (and admired for) her curves. Sookie cares very much about her family and friends and is willing to sacrifice a lot for their happiness and safety. I’m looking forward to more books in her world.
As far as side characters go, I’m not sure that I have the energy to write about each of them and feel that it would lead to spoilers. I will say that I love Eric
Recommendations
Please give this series a try if you like Paranormal or mysteries!!
Going Deeper – slight spoilers for books 1-9
Reading the books a second time gave me a chance to really pay attention to the change in Sookie’s personality through-out the series. While I am pleased with where the author has taken the character, I think it shocks many at how cold and almost ruthless Sookie has become. I think it is a natural change that anyone who was as naive and innocent as Sookie would become tougher after going through what she experiences. It is mentioned MANY times how Sookie considers herself to be a “bad Christian” for wishing death on those who want to harm her. I honestly don’t know what message Charlaine is trying to send by doing that. Is she saying it is OK for Sookie to be feel that way (that her life comes first)? Or that she really has become a bad person? I don’t think she’s a bad person. I think that I would feel much the same way after being attacked over and over and over…

totally agree! (nuff said LOL)
@ Felicia : thanks
You made me howl with your six-word summary. LOL. I’m right there with you on the Eric bus. Great site!
@ Suzanne : My Dead in the Family one? LOL I don’t think the hubs found it as funny as I do specially since he’s not a reader and doesn’t understand how you can truly love/lust a fictional person
Thanks for stopping by!!
