Amazon : The Iron Daughter by Julie Kagawa (paperback Aug 1, 2010)

Book Review in 6 words:

Completely in love with the story!

Why did I read this? And am I glad I did?

After finishing the first in the series, The Iron King, I was hooked and needed to know what happened next to the characters! I couldn’t have been more thrilled to get a chance to read The Iron Daughter early!! I stayed up all night to finish it in one sitting (even though I should have been catching up on sleep for NY lol). I don’t regret the lost sleep at all! I think the second book is even better than the first! It also had an ending that left me wanting more without utterly depressing me. (I was actually giddy after I finished it!)

Brief Summary

Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron Fey, iron-bound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her. Worse, Meghan’s own fey powers have been cut off. She’s alone in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can’t help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart.

Plot/Pacing/Writing Style

I loved the plot of the last book and really loved where she took it in this one! I gave it 4 1/2 stars instead of higher because I felt like it was a tad predictable, HOWEVER, I read it all in one sitting (until 4am) to see if I was right lol.

I had NO trouble getting into this and never lost interest.

Characters & Setting

As I said before, Meghan is one of my new favorite female leads and she didn’t disappoint in this sequel. She continues to deal with her new life while making new friends and finding a new strength within herself. I cried with her pain and laughed with accomplishments.

I think I’m in love with Ash. While he wasn’t always “prince charming”, he’s still learning to open up. Puck unfortunately annoys me. I just don’t think I like people who make trouble for fun.

There are a few new characters that I grew to like and am looking forward to seeing some in the next book.

Recommendations

If you liked The Iron King (even if you didn’t love it) please give this second in the series a chance!! If you haven’t read The Iron King, what are you waiting for?!

Going Deeper

– contains spoilers for The Iron King –

While it breaks my heart, I liked that Ash was still dealing with the loss of a past love and struggling with how that relates to Meghan. We get to see through Meghan’s eyes how hard it is for her and I’m very happy it didn’t cause her to completely give up. Even though I’ve been with Shane since we were 18, we still have exes that make each other jealous. I can’t imagine how much harder it would be if you were older and really loved another person.

  • ZOMG! How jealous am I that you got to read TID!!!!! *dies* I read the spoiler, but I want more!!!!

Ash, honey, I’m coming…. but I’m a mere mortal, so I’ll see you in Aug. *pouts*

Thanks for the review. I’m glad you read it in one sitting so you could get back to us right away!

  • Glad you like it so much! It is a time-sucker isn’t it? You just GOTTA know how it ends! Now the waiting for The Iron Queen begins and who knows how long THAT will be!

  • Tara SG

@ Missie : lol I think you’ll be reading it as much at once as you can as well :)

  • Tara SG

@ Stacey (Wicked Walker) : Thanks again so much for the help!!

The only terrible part of reading this so early is now the wait for the next book is going to feel REALLY long lol.

  • So jealous that you got to read this and I have to wait until August! August seems soooooo far away….. But I’ll forgive you because of your great review! ;)

Ash is adorable, but I love a man with a sense of mischief too, so think Puck is more my type. You didn’t mention
Grim, so hope he’s in the story too!

  • Tara SG

@Alexia 561 : I think you’ll really love this. And yes, Grim is in it too. I think he’s a great supporting character!

  • cizara

OMG i liked puck the most !! his soooo loyal to meghan and always listens to her, he ignored oberons rules for her it kinda got to me when she made the deal with ash to go with him to the unseelie thingy lol.
how much trouble would puck be in ?
he ditched his place and took care of her for 16 years ( in the human world ) and he always remembered her birthdays and stuff – it so slack

anyways does he puck have feelings for her ??

  • Tara SG

@ cizara : I don’t want to give too much away, but I think you’ll like the next book :)

  • I haven’t read Iron King yet – and I don’t know what I’m waiting for! This sounds like a really great series :)

  • Tara SG

@ Alita : I don’t know what you’re waiting for either! Unless maybe you’re waiting for the next book to come out… because I definitely preferred the second in the series and it doesn’t come out until Aug :/

  • EMMA

I read Iron King and Winters Passage. If you read winters passage it kinda gives you an insight. I love the series and Im Totally dieing…Like right now from the anticipation.

  • Tara SG

@ EMMA : At least you don’t have long to wait! I can’t wait to read the final copy!

  • Renee

The story is very interesting. However, I have a huge dislike towards the main character. I find her very unlikable. I’m a fan of Puck. But not Meghan. She is very selfish, ignorant, stubborn, and weak. I guess that’s what makes her human but as a person in general. She’s a coward and thinks only about her feelings and reacts without thinking. I hope to see her progress more as a logical and brave, worthy princess because I haven’t seen that yet in the second book.

  • Tara SG

@ Renee : Could you give an example of why you thought she was selfish or ignorant? I won’t deny that she is stubborn and sometimes weak, but I found those to be very human and “normal” teenage girl characteristics. I’m really interested to see what made you dislike her!

I just started reading this series like, a couple hours ago, and I’m hooked. I stopped reading JUST to look up the second book. And all I have to say is; although its insanely predictable, I luffles it ;) PUCK IS SO MINE!! I loves him!! TO DEATH! Idk why, but I always manage to fall in love with someone from a book. And I’m not ashamed. Haha…. ‘Ash’ is in ‘ashamed’. ASHamed ;) (Sorry… I’m delirous from being seperated from the book for so long ;])
