Here is a review by one of my best friends, DeShanee. We normally read very different books and when I received this one for review I felt she would enjoy it more than I would. Here is her review :
Glorious By: Bernice L. McFadden

Glorious is one of those books that shock you within a few pages. The simple chain of events knocks the reader for a loop. This is the story of a fictional writer that spans across three very influential moments in African American history. The reader watches as the man character, Easter Venetta Bartlett, starts as a young girl in the Jim Crow ruled South, a young woman in Harlem during the Renaissance, and an adult during the Civil Rights movement.
An event so unrelated to her affected Easter so much. The unlikely twist of fates begins when the Jack Johnson and James Jeffries bout results in Easters family falling apart. The rape of her sister, her father’s emasculation, and her mother’s death lead Easter to flee from home and strike out on her own.
So begins the historical triumph bleeding into a personal tragedy. While on the run, she literally joins the circus and become an assistant to a cabaret dancer called Rain. Easter becomes Rain’s assistant and waits on her hand and foot. However, Rain teaches Easter perseverance, self esteem and to appreciate her own body. But through clashing personalities, Easter again runs away from Rain and her circus life.
Throughout her struggles and journeys, Eater always has her love of books and her writings. It was her escape from the real life tragedies and pit falls she faced.
She later meets and marries Collin in New York and commits to married life. This is later turned upside down from lies, embezzlement, and scandal. After losing her husband, Easter is embraced by a woman named Meredith who breaks the bond of trust and sends Easter on another journey.
The only problem I had with this book was the end. The book was so fast paced and filled with emotion I couldn’t stop reading. Everything was so detailed and I felt every feeling and every tear seemed so real. But the end just seemed like a face palm. The final chapter left me wanting more.

I hate when a book lets you down right at the end! Though I’ve heard many positive things about this author, particularly her book Sugar. Perhaps I’ll start with that one and then try this one afterwards.
Wow, this sounds like powerful, emotional read. I gotta have it. Thanks fot the review.
@ Aarti : My friend that read this really loved her writing style and I’m pretty sure she’ll be reading other books by the author
@ Lisa Richards : She said it was very well-written and the story definitely took her by surprise. Let me know what you think of it!
