Amazon : Angels’ Blood by Nalini Singh : paperback / eBook

This book in 6 words:

never think of angels the same

Why did I read this? And am I glad I did?

I heard about this book from Love Vampire’s review in which she gave it 5 stars. While I only gave it 4 stars, I really liked it! I started the book late last night and stayed up until 5am to finish it. At no point was I tired at all! I’m not usually one to want to read books about angels, but this was a unique storyline without religious undertones. While there is a lot of sexual tension, I’d still consider this an Urban Fantasy. There is a lot of violence, but that doesn’t bother me. I have already gotten the next in the series.

Brief Summary

Nalini Singh introduces readers to a world of beauty and bloodlust, where angels hold sway over vampires.

Vampire hunter Elena Deveraux is hired by the dangerously beautiful Archangel Raphael. But this time, it’s not a wayward vamp she has to track. It’s an archangel gone bad.

The job will put Elena in the midst of a killing spree like no other—and pull her to the razor’s edge of passion. Even if the hunt doesn’t destroy her, succumbing to Raphael’s seductive touch just may. For when archangels play, mortals break.

Plot/Pacing/Writing Style

I found the story to unique and touching. Worlds in which the paranormal are known don’t always work for me, but this one was extremely well-thought out. The angels are not religious beings and can be cruel and inhumane. They rule over their territories with little concern for the human affairs going on within them. However, they do not like their humans to be hunted by the vampires they’ve created… hence the Guild vampire hunters. Some are born with the instinct to tract and capture rogue vampires. Elena is just such a human and is the best hunter of her time.

I found the pacing to be perfect. I was instantly captivated and at no point did I get bored or feel like the story was dragging. While it isn’t unusual for me to stay up to read a book front-to-back, it is unusual for me to not want to skim the pages at all. There was enough description to be able to picture the world and care about the characters without it being too detailed. Again I warn that it is a little gruesome at some points.

Characters

Elena is just how I like my kick-ass heroines! She is strong, smart, sassy, and seductive all without being manly or annoying. She has a dark past (that is extremely disturbing) and family that is terrible and uncaring. Raphael is the ultimate alpha-male. After living for centuries he is strong, powerful, and has lost most of his humanity, but don’t think that means he lost his sex appeal.

The supporting characters are also well-written. I’m extremely interested to see what happens to some of them in the next book.

Recommendations

I highly recommend this book to anyone who like Urban Fantasy or Paranormal Romance. You must be able to handle some gruesome scenes and a lot of sexual tension. I’m starting the next in the series today and I’m extremely worried that I’ll be in a bad case of PABD this weekend…

  • Hmm…I haven’t heard of this one but it sounds interesting. Like you said, the whole world where paranormals are “out” doesn’t always work for me, but if you enjoyed it a lot, I might have to give it a try. Thanks for the review! :)

@ Natalie : I’m not sure why I don’t like when paranormals are “out”. One of my favorite book series is The Southern Vampire series which has vampires living among humans… I think with Angels’ Blood I was so wrapped up in the characters and action that I didn’t have time to picture it as “my” world.
