There is no lack of vampires in literature. They have been in and out of fashion for some time and (hopefully) always will be. Along with all the new vampire books come all kinds of new vampires. I’m going to touch a few popular types and want to hear your feedback!! I want to know what kind of vampire you like (and let me know if I missed your vampire in my list)!
Simply fill out the form for a chance to win a
Sookie, Night Huntress, or Anne Rice book of your choice!!
(as long as it’s paperback) What if you don’t read books about vampires?! Just let me know why you have stayed away from that genre and what paranormal character your prefer — were, faerie, witch…
Classic Vampire
They sleep in coffins. Burst into flames in the sun. Will hunt and kill you without feeling bad about it. And are able to be killed with a stake or bottle of holy water.
- Dracula by Bram Stoker
- Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
Teen
Even though Twilight is both a popular book series and movie, people can’t stop making fun of sparkly vampires. They can go out in the sun, but their skin will sparkle as if covered with diamonds. They are “vegetarians” who don’t feed on humans. A certain main character falls in love with a human and strives to protect her and keep her from becoming a monster.
- Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
There is also the now popular TV series The Vampire Diaries based on the books by LJ Smith. There are some bad vamps and some good ones. They tend to stay out of the sun (unless they are wearing a special ring). They are strong, fast, and drink blood.
- The Vampire Diaries by L. J. Smith
Tough Guys with a Softside
These are what I consider a romantic version of a classic vampire. They tend to be superhuman and need blood to survive. Some are evil while some are more humane. They are almost always drop-dead gorgeous
- Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris
- Halfway to the Grave by Jeaniene Frost
- Dark Lover by J. R. Ward
Scientific / “Real” World
These vampires are “real”. Their strengths and differences are explained with science and they live in our world. That doesn’t always make them a good-guy. Some are a different race living among us. Others are parasites infected humans.
So what kind of vamp do you prefer to read about?
Did I leave your man off the list? Please let me know!
Ends 11:59pm 03.17.10

Love the twilight pic lol! And I think people might be biased by Eric’s pic… just saying hehe
Entered the contest but if it isn’t international, feel free to ignore my entry
Hahahaha I didn’t think about that :p
I guess I didn’t specify whether it was international or not… I think I’ll leave it open for everyone
You forgot vampires who kick ass! I’m thinking of Blade, Alucard in Kohta Hirano’s Hellsing (one of my favorites), and the Underworld films. Cheesy, I know, but so very fun.
Great prizes!
Think I will go for the tough vamp with a soft side like True Blood’s Eric
And he has a sense of humour unlike a lot of the others!
In Charlaine Harris’ world I love only Bill Compton. The book Bill, NOT the TV Bill. The other one does nothing for me.
But, hands down my fave, is Mencheres in Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress World. Yes, Bones is fabulous in every way, I love him too, but, Mencheres is the vamp for me. He has years of experience (4000+), he is dark-haired (very important), he has manners, and looks out for the thousands of people in his line.
I could use up a big chunk of your bandwidth going on and on with what else I love about him, but…you get the idea, right? There is nothing I dislike about him. Ok, stopping here!
I did! I guess they would kinda fall in the “classic” vampire genre? :/
ps I LOVE the Underworld movies!
Thanks!
He’s my favorite
Bill?! Are you crazy?! lol I’m Team Eric all the way! But I will agree that I like the book Bill much better than the TV Bill.
I like Mencheres too! I’m looking forward to the new book based on him that’s coming out soon
Yes, there is a new vampire you must check out. A vampire with a soul, and I’m not talking about Angel.
Check out William Maddox from Seers of Light by Jen DeLucy! He has my head spinning! :K
I totally heart your Twilight pic!! ‘Sparkly monster’? Way to go!! And thanks so much for such a wonderful contest and also for interacting with us. Hope I win this one!!;)

Great giveaway! I think you’ve tempted me to give the True Blood books and “Peeps” a read, I’ve heard a lot about them but I have yet to pick up the books. I would love to be entered if this is open internationally!
You did forget some of my favourites… Dimitri, Adrian and Christian. All three guys from the Vampire Academy series. If you haven’t read those books yet, I strongly suggest you do! =)
@ Brodie : Thanks! I have not read the Vampire Academy (or really looked into them much). I’ll be sure to check it out!

I think Jean-Claude from Anita Blake’s series is
pretty smokin”!!! Thanks for a great giveaway!!
Cara
I love the tough vamp with a soft side. Of course if he is also a hunky, alpha male all the better.
I like my vampire to be both classic and tough guy with a soft side. I like the tradition of them not going out in the sun and killing them with a stake and needed human blood. But I want them to be hot and look like us. Thanks for the fun contest!
Please don’t forget all the Ass-Kicking Vampires!
I’m liking Ian more and more after reading First Drop of Crimson by Jeaniene Frost.
@ Brenda : Oh yes, alpha males are very fun in books… in real life not so much :p
@ Tiah : I agree! I like a good mix
@ Caitlin : Oh yeah I like to think of them fitting into all the categories
I like the tough vamps with a soft side.
@ cfisher1504 : I just never got into that series. Perhaps I’ll have to try it again
@ Stephanie K : I think I may have to pick that up soon…. Thanks!
@ Julie : They seem to be popular
The Classic Vamp of course since love Anne Rice and Tough Guy with a soft side vamp because since reading so many new authors in the genre in the last couple years these vampire gentleman have become very poplular….
