Cover Shopping

You should never judge a book by its cover…

but what if it’s really, really pretty?

I’m finding myself cover shopping a lot lately. Examples of this would be Beautiful Creatures, Shiver, Wicked Lovely… So far they haven’t disappointed. I hate to say that I wouldn’t read a book just because it is ugly, but I may have passed by a plain book for a shiny one.

Do you cover shop?

What have you bought recently because it caught your eye?

Did it live up to the pretty cover?

  • I often pick books because of the cover. My mom teases me about it. But a few of my now favorite books I picked up because I loved the cover :) .

  • I have done this on occasion. A book has caught my eye because it is pretty and then it sounds good too so I buy it. If it didn’t sound interesting I probably wouldn’t but it. I like to have pretty books on my bookshelf.

I think I have a type of reverse cover shopping. There are certain books I avoid based on their front cover. Otherwise the front cover doesn’t play much into my choice – it’s more about the book synopsis on the back. If I actually spend the money on a book, I want to be sure I’ll like it, which means I usually only spend money on books by authors I already know and love (or am really really intrigued by said synopsis). I go to the library for the rest.

PS. Stiefvater = step-father in German

  • I’m definitely a victim to this. I will pick up handfuls of “pretty” books, only to sometimes read the cover and find it’s nothing I’m interested in. At least sometimes I’m able to avoid the purchase, not always.

@ Stacey – If you’ve found great books that way then it’s nothing to laugh at! :)

@ Rachel – I think this is more what happens to me as well. That it catches my eye with a pretty cover and then summary sells it. :)

@ Amanda – I’ve gotta say that I’ve done this as well. Specially really terrible romance covers lol.

@The1stdaughter – lol sometimes I’m able to avoid the purchase too… but usually only if another book catches my eye :)
